Turmeric Black Pepper Chicken (Simple Pantry Chicken That My Kids Fought Over)

Some nights you test a recipe…
and some nights a recipe tests itself.
This was one of those dinners where I honestly wasn’t sure how it would land. I had chicken breast, turmeric, black pepper, and a few pantry staples sitting on the counter. Nothing fancy. Just a quick idea I wanted to try.
The idea actually came from a podcast. Someone casually mentioned a dish they used to make when they were broke and didn’t want to go to the grocery store. They listed a few ingredients and said it came out surprisingly good. It wasn’t really a recipe — just something mentioned in passing — but it stuck with me.
So I tried it.
And when the kids started fighting over seconds, I knew this one was a keeper.
The chicken turns golden from the turmeric dredge, then finishes in a lightly sweet maple-black pepper sauce that coats everything beautifully. It’s simple, flavorful, and exactly the kind of dinner that feels like a win on a busy night.
We used skinless boneless chicken breast, and next time I’m definitely double batching it because this disappeared fast.
If you’re looking for a dinner that feels a little different but still uses pantry ingredients, this one might surprise you the same way it surprised us.

Smart Heart Rating 💛💛💛💛 (4 out of 5)
This recipe earns a strong rating because it uses lean chicken breast and simple ingredients without heavy sauces or cream.
Why This Recipe Scores High
This recipe earns a strong rating because it uses lean chicken breast and simple pantry ingredients without heavy cream, butter-based sauces, or deep frying.
A few things help keep it heart-smart:
• Lean protein from skinless chicken breast
• Simple sauce made with water instead of cream or butter
• Moderate natural sweetness from maple syrup instead of refined sugar
• Turmeric and black pepper, which add flavor without extra fat or sodium
It’s the kind of recipe that keeps comfort food on the table while making a few small adjustments that support heart health.
How to Make It Even Healthier
If you want to push this recipe closer to a 5-heart rating, try a few small tweaks:
• Use whole wheat flour or almond flour instead of white flour
• Serve over brown rice or Royal Blend rice for more fiber
• Add vegetables directly to the skillet (broccoli, snap peas, or green beans work well)
• Reduce the maple syrup slightly if you prefer less sweetness
None of these changes are required — they’re simply options if you want to increase the nutritional balance.

Some frequently asked questions
Ingredient that make this turmeric black pepper chicken work
This recipe uses simple pantry ingredients, but a few small details make a big difference in flavor and texture.
Chicken Breast
Boneless skinless chicken breast works beautifully here because it cooks quickly and stays tender when cut into bite-size pieces. Chicken thighs will work too if you prefer a richer flavor.
Turmeric
Turmeric gives the chicken its beautiful golden color and a warm earthy flavor. It’s also known for its anti-inflammatory properties. The turmeric in the dredge lightly seasons the chicken and helps create that golden crust.
Black Pepper
Black pepper is more than just seasoning in this recipe — it’s the backbone of the sauce. It adds a gentle heat that balances the sweetness from the maple syrup. Black pepper also helps your body absorb the turmeric better.
Maple Syrup
Just a small amount adds depth and rounds out the peppery flavor. It doesn’t make the dish sweet — it simply balances everything.
Flour
The flour dredge helps create the golden coating and also naturally thickens the sauce when the chicken simmers back in the skillet.
Water
Using water instead of broth keeps the sauce clean and lets the turmeric and black pepper shine.
Flavor Boosters (Optional but Recommended)
These small additions elevate the flavor without complicating the recipe.
• Garlic powder – adds warmth and depth
• Soy sauce – enhances savory flavor
• Lemon juice – brightens the sauce and balances the maple syrup
What to Serve With It
This chicken works really well with:
• Royal Blend rice
• Steamed broccoli
• Green beans
• Simple cucumber salad
The sauce soaks into rice beautifully, which is why my kids kept going back for more.

A new pantry favorite
The kids are still on vacation mode. Bedtimes drift, boredom strikes and by the time dinner rolls around everyone is hungry and a little impatient. But today the weather was actually really nice so not only did the kids want to eat but they also wanted to ride their bikes. This meal came together so quickly we were able to do both.
That’s exactly why I love meals like this.
Dinner doesn’t have to take all of me.
It just needs to be simple, flavorful, and ready before the “is dinner done yet?” questions start.

Seriously, this recipe surprised me in the best way. New recipe, a few pantry ingredients, and suddenly everyone’s asking for seconds.
That’s the kind of win I’ll take any night.

P.S. Make a double batch or you just might be left wishing you had.
