Chocolate Cheesecake Mason Jar Dessert (Easy Layered Chocolate Cake Jars)

Chocolate cheesecake mason jar desserts layered with chocolate cake and chocolate cream on a marble kitchen counter.

I once wrote a children’s book called Teigan Bakes a Cake. It’s about my daughter trying to make a cake all by herself. As you can imagine, things get a little messy. Flour on the counter, batter on the floor, the kind of kitchen chaos that happens when a determined kid decides she’s doing it her way. In the end, her mom introduces her to mug cake — the kind you mix in a mug and cook in the microwave in just a few minutes. Simple, quick, and perfectly portioned. These chocolate cheesecake mason jar cake desserts remind me of that same idea. They’re not microwave mug cakes, but they carry the same spirit: simple, small, and satisfying.

I’ll admit something though — while I appreciate a good shortcut like boxed cake mix, I’m a little biased toward my Great Depression chocolate cake with espresso. It’s rich, deeply chocolatey, and somehow always feels like the right cake for just about anything. Right now the book is sitting unfinished because my illustrator lives in Pakistan and suddenly went quiet. I’m not sure what happened, and I may have to find a new illustrator to finish the project. But in the meantime, we can still enjoy cake. And these chocolate cheesecake mason jar desserts are just as fun. Truthfully, lately I’ve been a little obsessed with mason jars. They look great, they stack neatly in the fridge, and the portion control makes them perfect for a quick grab when someone in the house says, “Is there anything sweet?”

Kitchen talk

my mason jar era…

I’ll admit something — I have a bit of a mason jar obsession. There’s just something about them that makes desserts feel both simple and special at the same time. They stack neatly in the fridge, they travel well, and the portion control makes them perfect for those moments when someone in the house asks, “Is there anything sweet?”

I also love layered desserts. When you can see the chocolate cake, the creamy filling, and the fluffy topping all stacked together, it feels a little bakery-worthy without actually being complicated.

The chocolate cake in these jars is one of my all-time favorites — my Great Depression chocolate cake with espresso. It’s the kind of cake that uses simple pantry ingredients but somehow turns out deeply chocolatey and incredibly moist every time. The espresso doesn’t make it taste like coffee; it just makes the chocolate taste richer.

Once the cake is baked, the rest comes together quickly. A little chocolate cheesecake filling, another layer of cake, and a light yogurt whipped topping.

Simple layers, great flavor, and a dessert that looks far fancier than the effort it takes to make it.

And if you’re anything like me, you might find yourself keeping a few jars in the fridge for those nights when a quick chocolate dessert sounds just about perfect.
